After a good weekend of poker on Friday night (with some other teachers), a little bit of work in the classroom on Saturday, and some lounging on Sunday, we have officially started our careers! In-service started on Monday, and since then we have pretty much spent most of our days at school. It was really great to finally meet the people that we are going to be working with. Our staff is really fun and friendly and we have already started making some good bonds with people. Even though it is a little overwhelming starting our first year of teaching, the good thing is that all of our friends are teachers, so we don't feel bad about spending a lot of time at school because there is nothing else to do when everyone we know is working too! We can definitely see ourselves enjoying our life here.
We have received almost all of our boxes that we shipped from Anchorage. We had a minor casualty yesterday; our balsamic vinegar bottle broke and exploded all over everything else in the box. We had to spend quite a bit of time washing off cans and bottles and re-labeling with a Sharpe. But, it could have been a lot worse! We are coming to realize that this is just a part of living here. We are convinced that they guys who do freight on the airplanes either drop-kick the boxes to each other, or they just dump them out of the plane. We are starting to just get happy when we see that most things arrive in tact.
On an exciting note... our neighbors John and Theresa have recently just discovered an organic farm in Carnation, WA (Full Circle Farms) that ships boxes of organic fruits and vegetables. Theresa set it up with them so that they are now going to be delivering to Kotzebue. For only $40 (including shipping) we can get two boxes of fresh organic produce delivered up here on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. John and Theresa just received their first box and everything came in incredible shape. As John put it, "I have never been so excited about fruits and vegetables in my life!" We are pretty stoked to get our account set up. Before long, the whole town is going to be ordering!
Anyway, we have one more day of meetings tomorrow (Thursday) and we work on Friday and Saturday in our classrooms. Then, the first day of school is on Monday! We both have a lot to do, and are a little overwhelmed with everything, but we are anxious to meet our kids and get the year started.

I know how you 2 feel right now. I have just spent the last week setting up my classroom. For the next 2 weeks, I will be doing inservices and finishing up the small details in the room. Also, I will be looking at and planning my curriculum. I'm so happy for you 2. It sounds like Alaska is a good fit for you guys and you are having a blast.
